PPR 11: Progress Made, But IMO Fails to Act on Black Carbon Emissions, Despite Credible and Direct Pathway

As a meeting of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Sub-Committee on Pollution Prevention and Response (PPR 11) closed today in London, the Clean Arctic Alliance called on the IMO to urgently adopt a mandatory regulation requiring ships to move to distillate fuels while operating in and near to the Arctic, and for the maritime sector to follow a 2021 IMO resolution above 60 degrees north. In addition, The Alliance called on the international shipping sector  to now implement the new guidance agreed this week to protect the Arctic from black carbon emissions from shipping

As a meeting of the International Maritime Organization’s Sub-Committee on Ship Design and Construction (SDC 10) closed today in London, the Clean Arctic Alliance welcomed the IMO’s agreement on reducing underwater noise pollution from shipping, but criticised its failure to make progress toward mandatory rules that would decrease the impact of shipping on Arctic wildlife.

Arctic Council Must Show Leadership on Reduction of Black Carbon Emissions from Shipping

In a letter to Morten Høglund, the Chair of the Senior Arctic Officials of the Arctic Council, today the Clean Arctic Alliance and its member organisation, Norway-based Bellona, called on the Arctic Council to take action to reduce black carbon and greenhouse gas emissions from shipping in the Arctic.
