This document welcomes the proposal submitted by all coastal States of the Mediterranean Sea, all Member States of the European Union and the European Commission in document MEPC 78/11 (Albania et al.) to designate the Mediterranean Sea, as a whole, as an Emission Control Area (ECA) for Sulphur Oxides. The designation of a MED SOx ECA will improve air quality and provide health benefits for millions of residents as well as for nature, agriculture, and heritage conservation. This document supports a quick agreement on, and implementation of, an ECA for SOx emissions in the Mediterranean Sea as a whole.
