Recommendations of civil society organisations on the occasion of the One Planet Polar Summit

Recommendations of civil society organisations on the occasion of the One Planet Polar Summit

We, the undersigned organisations, urgently call on leaders attending the One Planet Polar Summit to agree to work together to deliver a bold and widespread plan of action to protect our planet and societies worldwide from the global impacts of cryosphere loss, and to give polar and high mountain regions, their ecosystems and people calling these places home the best chance to adapt and build resilience to the impending consequences of our fast- changing climate. We ask them to treat the climate and nature crisis as one indivisible global health emergency.

Arctic Circle 2023 backup

Iceland’s Minister for the Environment and Natural Resources, Guðlaugur Þór Þórðarson provided a brief introduction   The Clean Arctic Alliance’s “Arctic Shipping 2030” event took place during the 10th Arctic Circle Assembly in Iceland on Saturday 21st October, 2023.  As the Arctic faces a climate crisis, access by ships is changing. Between 2013 and 2019, there has been a 25% increase in shipping in the Arctic and a 75% increase in the distance travelled by ships in the Arctic. In parallel, international regulation to reduce the impact of shipping both globally and particularly on the Arctic is under development.
