Arctic photographic exhibition London, October 2018 – Calling professional & amateur photographers

Let's get Heavy Fuel Oil out of the Arctic

Calling professional & amateur photographers

The Clean Arctic Alliance is a coalition of organisations campaigning for a HFO Free Arctic! Heavy fuel oil (HFO) is the dirtiest of fuels used by shipping, virtually impossible to clean-up in the event of a spill and highly polluting when burnt in ships’ engines. In October 2018 at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London, a meeting of the Marine Environment Protection Committee will meet to discuss a ban on HFO use by ships in the Arctic.

During the meeting, the Clean Arctic Alliance plans to hold a photographic exhibition to showcase a vision of the Arctic and to highlight what is at stake. The exhibition will be a subtle yet impactful reminder to the delegates of the need for improved Arctic protection.

We want to show that the Arctic is not just a remote land of snow and ice, it is home to indigenous communities and iconic wildlife whose future now hangs in the balance as a consequence of human activities. As the sea ice disappears, newly accessible shipping routes are being used opportunistically. The risks have never been greater.

Dates and venue

The meeting and exhibition will run from 22 – 26 October 2018 at 4 Albert Embankment, London, UK.

Theme

The Arctic will be the central theme for the exhibition with an emphasis on the following categories:

  1.    Communities and Arctic life
  2.    Arctic landscapes and wildlife
  3.    Sensitive and vulnerable Arctic – the threats from shipping
  4.    Opportunities for sustainable Arctic shipping

Format of exhibition

A collection of around 25 images is proposed each with printed information on the picture, content, location, credit to photographer, and a relevant caption, fact, or quote from the photographer to reflect the theme depicted. Display options are being considered with the venue and will be finalised soon.

Photographers

We are keen to work with photographers from Arctic states and beyond who, like us, have a great passion for the region and have captured unusual and often unseen images that tell the story of life in the Arctic and the challenges faced but also offers hope for a clean future.

Taking part

We’d like to hear from you if you are interested in taking part and put forward one or more images for consideration if you think you have material that covers the themes mentioned above.  We are looking for images that are free to use for the sole purpose of this exhibition. Full copyright remains that of the photographer. Closing date: Friday, September 14th, 2018.

Contact us at:  [email protected] to register your interest, or if you have any queries.
