A position paper by Clean Arctic Alliance member Green Transition Denmark on why scrubbers should be banned in territorial seas today. It also makes the case for a global ban to be introduced on the discharge of scrubber water. The number of scrubbers installed on ships has increased sharply in recent years, as it allows ships to continue sailing in emission control areas on heavy bunker oil, one of the most polluting fuels in use today. The “legal dumping” of scrubber contaminated waste water into the sea causes serious adverse effects to the climate, public health and the marine environment. Scrubbers are not a green transition, and the industry should switch to cleaner fuels.
Position on Scrubbers: Stop the dumping of hazardous waste from ships
