Clean Arctic Alliance Response: Call for input on the impacts of toxics on Indigenous peoples

Call for input on the impacts of toxics on Indigenous peoples

In early 2022, the Clean Arctic Alliance submitted information to the UN investigation of the impact of toxic substances on the human rights of Indigenous Peoples. The Clean Arctic Alliance input draws from input to an earlier inquiry to an impact analysis of the International Maritime Organization. The Clean Arctic Alliance recognises that the involvement of representatives of Indigenous communities in international negotiations on matters of direct consequence to their food security, safety and livelihoods should be non-negotiable. The rights of Arctic Indigenous communities to a clean and sustainable environment must be respected. All UN agencies must take the protection of Arctic ecosystems, Arctic peoples and wildlife seriously. The report of the Special Rapporteur is available here – see paragraph 35 and footnote 46 for Clean Arctic Alliance input: A/77/183: The impact of toxic substances on the human rights of indigenous peoples – Report of the Special Rapporteur on the implications for human rights of the environmentally sound management and disposal of hazardous substances and wastes, Marcos Orellana | OHCHR
