Scrubbers or Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems (EGCS) are an alternative compliance mechanism designed to remove sulphur from the exhaust of international ships. This after-treatment provides an alternative to using low sulphur fuels to fulfill the requirements of MARPOL Annex VI regulation. Most scrubbers in current use are of an open-loop design, resulting in a mixture of seawater with sulphur, heavy metals, PAHs and other substances being discharged into the waters around the ship. Recent studies have shown negative impacts of these discharges on the marine environment.
During this webinar speakers elaborated on these issues and their relevance to the discussions at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) which will next consider the use of scrubbers at the 11th session of the Pollution Prevention & Response (PPR) subcommittee meeting in February 2024.
