July 1st 2024 is a momentous day for the protection of the Arctic, as from this date heavy fuel oil (HFO) – the dirtiest of shipping fuels – will no longer be allowed to be carried as fuel or used on board ships operating in Arctic waters. Unfortunately there are significant loopholes in the regulation which will allow Arctic coastal nations to grant waivers and for shipping companies to make use of exemptions which allow ships with protected fuel tanks to continue carrying and using HFO until 1 July 2029.

The Clean Arctic Alliance is calling on IMO member states to implement the Arctic HFO ban and enforce it fully with immediate effect without resorting to loopholes. We’re also calling for the the shipping industry to seize this landmark opportunity to demonstrate its willingness to embrace a cleaner future for the Arctic instead of hiding behind the use of exemptions and to switch to readily available, relatively cleaner distillate marine fuels or to alternative forms of propulsion en route to decarbonisation. This would demonstrate that the shipping world is willing and able to go above and beyond the call of duty.

Help us build a fleet of HFO-free ships, then post your photos on social media – and tag us! – to demand that the Arctic HFO ban to be implemented fully and now – not in five years’ time – to combat the Arctic meltdown with dire global consequences.
